PHOENIX – This past week, Gov. Katie Hobbs and her running mate, former Mesa Mayor John Giles, traveled across the state, meeting with local workers, union members, and labor leaders to thank them for all of their hard work and discuss their commitment to protecting Arizona workers.
Katie kicked off the week on Monday, joining Senator Kelly in Tucson for a Southern Arizona labor mixer.
On Thursday, Katie and John toured MKB Construction’s headquarters and prefabrication facility, meeting with Carpenters Local 1912 President Fabian Sanchez, company leadership, and local employees.
On Friday, they attended the AFL-CIO Labor Day Luncheon, where Katie emphasized the vital role of unions and workers’ voices in our democracy.
John wrapped up the series on Monday attending the Pima Area Labor Federation Labor Day Picnic, where he thanked workers and encouraged attendees to make their voices heard this November.
Engaging with working Arizonans has been a top priority since day one of the Hobbs campaign. Her campaign released its first endorsement from the Arizona AFL-CIO, representing more than 185,000 union members statewide. Katie has crisscrossed the state to hear directly from workers and businesses, visiting union halls and touring local farms, restaurants, and healthcare facilities. Throughout her conversations with labor leaders, advocates, and small business owners, she has focused on lowering costs for Arizonans and protecting workers’ rights, so hardworking Arizonans can thrive.
Since taking office, Katie has delivered on the issues that matter most to working Arizonans: lowering costs and expanding access to necessities like healthcare and childcare. This year, she signed a bipartisan budget providing $1.4 billion in tax relief for hardworking Arizonans, including the elimination of taxes on tips and overtime pay. She has delivered paid parental leave, childcare investments, and healthcare expansions for working families, and canceled $1 billion in medical debt for nearly 700,000 Arizonans.
She has worked to deliver for Arizona workers and ensure unions have a seat at the table, investing in efforts to double state apprenticeships through the BuildItAZ initiative, launching a first-in-the-nation Workplace Heat Stress State Emphasis Plan to protect outdoor workers from Arizona’s extreme heat, and blocking legislative efforts to erode workers’ protections.
