Katie Hobbs Raises Stakes, Calls for State Action as U.S. Senate
Fails To Codify Roe v. Wade

PHOENIX — Today, Arizona Secretary of State and gubernatorial candidate Katie Hobbs released the following statement in response to the Senate’s rejection of the Women’s Health Protection Act, which would have codified Roe v. Wade into federal law:

“Without Roe’s constitutional protection and without a federal law, states and governors are now the last line of defense for reproductive rights in America. The stakes for women and families in Arizona could not be higher this November,” said Secretary Hobbs. “Arizona women will be living under a total ban on abortion if Governor Ducey and our legislature continue to refuse to repeal these dangerous laws. And it won’t stop there – these out-of-touch politicians are already talking about banning contraception and turning regular citizens into bounty hunters. As governor, I will always stand up for women’s reproductive rights and I will never allow the government to dictate what women can and can’t do with their own bodies.” 

Secretary Hobbs has been vehement in her opposition to Republicans’ relentless assault on reproductive freedoms. She has called on Governor Ducey and the legislature to immediately repeal Arizona’s 1901 law that criminalizes abortion and requires prison time for doctors. As the only pro-choice woman in the race and the presumptive Democratic nominee for governor, Secretary Hobbs knows how much is at stake in November and is prepared to keep fighting for Arizonans.
